In the
Australia Day Honours (26 January 2006) Valentine Max
JEFFERY was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)
for service to the community of Tharwa, particularly through the
local bush fire brigade.
In the 1995
Queen's Birthday Honours list announced on June 12, local
grazier Mr Peter Barry BUCKMASTER was awarded the medal of
the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to the A.C.T. rural
community.
Mr Buckmaster was born 1936 and has lived all his life at 'The Rivers', a property near Uriarra Crossing. He served 26 years as president of the A.C.T. Rural Lessees' Association and has been an active member for 40 years. He has also spent the better part of the last 43 years involved in the rural fire scene.
He joined the Fairlight/Rivers Bush Fire Brigade around 1952 (his father, Vernie Buckmaster, was a Deputy Controller for the Rivers Fire District in the early 1940's).
During the 1950's he was Secretary for the Fairlight/Rivers Bush Fire Brigade for a number of years and took his turn as President. In the 1980's he served on the A.C.T. Bush Fire Council as a representative of the A.C.T. Rural Lessees' Association, in addition he was a Deputy Contoller for the Central Fire District. In the past he was awarded the National Medal and Clasps for Australian Fire Services Personnel.
He has maintained links with the Rivers Volunteer Bushfire Brigade (re-established in 1989), as well as the Fairlight and Mullion Bush Fire Brigades in adjoining N.S.W.
