Friday 17th January 2003

Today marked the beginning of Extreme Fire Weather. Back burns were being put in and firefighting crews consolidated containment lines around the Bendora Fire. Ground crews were eventually evacuated from this area, as the fire burning into the Brindabella Valley made a run towards Bulls Head. The staging area was also evacuated. The Bendora Fire was now unattended as it was considered unsafe. The fire eventually headed towards the Cotter River and then burnt over the Tidbinbilla Range to the north, threatening properties and taking out the pine plantation.

Resources were also being evacuated from the Stockyard Spur Fire back down to Orroral Valley for safety. The fire in the afternoon spotted over Corin Dam to the eastern side and made a major run towards Mt Tennent early in the night. Crews were sent to Corin Forest and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and throughout the valley floor for property protection.

All units had been evacuated or redeployed. Throughout the night the fire continued its onslaught and crowned continually and threatened many rural properties and homes.
