A.C.T. Early Bushfire Brigades cica 1900
from the Queanbeyan Age Friday 18th December 1903
"A meeting was held at Mr. W. Mayo's on Tuesday evening last to
form a bushfire brigade. Over 20 farmers were present, and Mr. E. E.
Hudson was voted to the chair. It was unanimously decided to form a
bush fire brigade at Majura to attend all fires that may occur within
the following boundaries: -From Gungableen to Winter's farm and
Conunughtman's Creek, thence to Queanbeyan and Gundaroo Road, and from
there via that road to the Queanbeyan River, crossing near the railway
and running along the main road to Harris's Lane near Woden, thence
along Duntroon boundary through Sweet Hills to Yarralumla boundary,
from there to Canberra River, and thence to starting point.
Messrs Walter McIntosh, Jno. McIntosh, Darmody, F. Warwick, W.
Mayo, and E. E. Hudson were appointed as officers for the
supervision of the brigade, should fire occur. All present agreed
to provide food and water. The meeting was very enthusiastic, and
in the event of fire the " Majura Corps " will be a great
acquisition."

"At a meeting convened to organise a bush fire brigade at
Narrabundah last Saturday week it was decided that Messrs F. Campbell,
P. Steedy, W. Moore, E. G. Crace, J. Wallace and F. Sullivan act as
directors of a brigade to be termed the Limestone Plains Brigade,
which shall operate within the following boundaries:-From Harris's via
Cunningham's to the Red Rooke, hence down the Murrumbidgee River to
its junction with the Ginninderra, then back along the Yass Queanbeyan
Road to Canberra Post Office thence along the Narrabundah road back to
Harris."

"The Weetangara Fire Brigade burnt several firebreaks around the
various holdings before Christmas. Mr. Crace kindly lent his
fire-fighter for the purpose."
